Message from the President
Parliament has just dissolved. As the Country gets into gear towards the 13th General Election, for pharmacists everywhere, it is “business as usual”. Let us keep up our good work as professionals.
On 02.04.13 an excellent Seminar on “Vetting of Medicines Advertisement” was organized by the Pharmaceutical Services Division and the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society. An overwhelming response of 270 participants attended to learn about the technical, legal, ethical and procedural requirements in medicines advertisement. Topics such as Control of Medicines Advertisement (Electronic media & internet), guideline on avoiding false and misleading advertisement, guideline for facilities and health services and the Cosmetic Advertisement Code were covered. It was officiated by YBhg Dato’ Eisah Abd Rahman, the Senior Director of Pharmaceutical Services who in her usual eloquent self gave a comprehensive overview of the vetting of medicines advertisement and the role played by the Ministry of Health. The team behind the Innovative programme is headed by Encik Mohd Hatta Bin Ahmad, capably assisted by Encik Muhammad Lukmani Bin Ibrahim, Mr Lam Kai Kun and many hardworking members. The papers presented were saved in a pen-drive distributed to the participants and indeed our Pharmaceutical Services Division has gone places and done us proud!
On the same day, a dialogue was held between YBhg Datuk Eisah Abd Rahman and her team with council members of MPS. Many topics were covered including CPD, PRP training, Benchmark requirements and routine enforcement checks. An important point was clarified that the 30 CPD points by end 2013 are encouraged but NOT compulsory or mandatory. It is heartening to note that members have shown interest to adopt best practice through Continuing Professional Development (CPD). Meanwhile there are numerous ways of attaining the points and members are encouraged to keep their own records. Nevertheless, it is not a statutory requirement for renewal of annual practicing certificates as of now.
In the afternoon a courtesy call was also paid by the council members on the Director-General of Health, YBhg Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah who talked about his Vision in Healthcare Transformation and how Malaysia will continually be a role model in its primary healthcare programme. He came across as a brilliant leader and we can look forward to the Ministry Scaling greater heights.
Dear Members, let us pool our resources and create better opportunities for ourselves. Join the Society and become a more united group. There is safety in numbers. Indeed we are responsible for our own future and we need each other to create a better future for ourselves and the generations of pharmacists to come.
See you at the top!
Yours in MPS
Datuk Nancy Ho

21ST CENTURY HAZARDS OF SMOKING AND BENEFITS OF STOPPING (IN WOMEN)
Among UK women, two-thirds of all deaths of smokers in their 50s, 60s, and 70s are caused by smoking; smokers lose at least 10 years of lifespan. Although the hazards of smoking until age 40 years and then stopping are substantial, the hazards of continuing are ten times greater. Stopping before age 40 years (and preferably well before age 40 years) avoids more than 90% of the excess mortality caused by continuing smoking; stopping before age 30 years avoids more than 97% of it.
